Newell Brown is an assistant coach with the Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks of the NHL. He was inducted into the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
Brown rejoined the Ducks organization after spending four seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets as an associate coach. The Cornwall, Ontario native served as an assistant coach for the Ducks in the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons.
Brown has more than 17 years of coaching experience at the NCAA, American Hockey League and NHL levels. Prior to his original stint with Anaheim, Brown was an assistant coach with the Chicago Blackhawks for two seasons, 1996-98.
Before joining the NHL ranks, Brown spent four seasons in the Detroit Red Wings organization as head coach of the Adirondack Red Wings, Detroit's AHL affiliate. He also served as head coach of Michigan Tech University from 1990-92 and was an assistant at his alma mater, Michigan State University, from 1986-90. He helped the Spartans win back-to-back regular season and tournament titles in 1988-89 and 1989-90.
As a player, Brown spent two seasons with the Cornwall Royals of the Ontario Hockey League in 1978-79 and 1979-80 and helped the Royals win the Memorial Cup in 1979. From 1980-84, Brown played at Michigan State, where he served as team captain in his final three seasons and earned First Team All-CCHA honors in 1982.
