Team Cornwall Bowls with Max

It was a couple of hours of fun that translates into a year of fun for more than 200 children.

The 17th annual Max Keeping Bowlathon on Sunday raised an eye-popping $89,000; that will help fund children from low income families to access recreation, sports, camp and educational opportunities.

Two groups of bowlers from Team Cornwall were among the 450 who took part in the event, held at Merivale Bowling Centre in west end Ottawa.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, Liberal MPP Yasir Naqvi, and CTV News anchor Graham Richardson were among the celebrities circulating through the bowling alley, including a visit from Darth Vader and his stormtroopers, and a dozen or so mascots.

Almost $25,000 in prizes were won by the bowlers - none for bowling. Many teams come in costume.

“The idea is, a couple of hours of fun for you equals a year of fun for kids,” Max Keeping told the Ottawa Sun.

The legendary broadcaster’s foundation continues to raise money for disadvantaged children and their families in Eastern Ontario. Over 16 years, the event has raised more than $1.5 million.

Allister Aitken, 11, and his family attended their first Birthdate Bowlathon representing Team Cornwall.

“It feels great (to help other kids),” said Aitken.

Allister was lucky enough to win the birthday bash prize which includes a Monopoly boardgame and tickets to Calypso amusement park and the Ottawa International Children’s Festival.

“I feel good, really excited,” Aitken said.
