Hundreds Enjoy Year in Review Presentation
Economic growth and welcoming new residents to Cornwall was the topic du jour at the Team Cornwall Year in Review held recently.
Roughly 325 community leaders and out-of-town guests filled Cinema One at Galaxy Cinema to listen to the very positive message that Cornwall is on the right track to future growth in all business sectors.
“This meeting is a great opportunity to recognize the valuable contributions of the business community over the past year,” said Mayor Bob Kilger, who along with MP Guy Lauzon and MPP Jim Brownell, gave special greetings.
“Cornwall is doing very well, especially considering the challenges we see globally,” said Mark Boileau, Manager of Cornwall Economic Development. “It’s an exciting time to be in Cornwall.”
Mr. Boileau provided an overview of development activity in 2010, and noted that City's low unemployment rate of 6.6% (below Ontario and Canada averages) will require additional efforts to attract new residents to the City.
Mr. Boileau also took the opportunity to take a peek at 2011 saying Cornwall will see further development of the Cornwall Business Park as well as the completion of the Benson Centre in the city’s west end. Boileau also highlighted the construction of a low level bridge and the waste water treatment plant as future projects that will begin to take shape in the next couple of years.
This year’s presentation marked the 12th straight year that the City’s Economic Development Department has delivered its report.
Team Cornwall Chairman Gilles Latour noted that the 300-plus Team Cornwall members now have even more ammunition to use when talking up the city’s “world of possibilities”.
“The economic development department continues to give us the tools to be good ambassadors for the city,” said Mr. Latour. “It is important that people hear about the exciting things that are happening in the City so that they can perhaps discard any dusty, outdated perceptions of Cornwall. Better yet - we need to invite people here so that they can experience first hand the 'new' Cornwall.”
Both Mr. Boileau and Mr. Latour unveiled special video presentations that will soon be available on YouTube and via TeamCornwall.com and ChooseCornwall.ca. The videos were put together by Fishrizzo Productions and Little Sleep Media, in conjuction with Dreambuilder Studios.
The meeting was sponsored by Ontario Power Generation and the St. Lawerence College Foundation. TV Cogeco filmed the meeting and plans to broadcast it on Channell 11.
The attendees to the event were given a Christmas spirit boost by the Chorus Novus choir.
