Summer Festival Celebrates Cornwall Waterfront

Cornwall Waterfest will be taking place August 13-15 at Lamoureux Park and the adjacent canal. A group of local volunteers have put together what promises to be great weekend filled with activities the whole family will enjoy. Event organizer Pat Clarke is “hoping the community comes out and supports this new exciting event”.

A highlight of the festival will be the Dragon Boat races set to happen on Saturday August 14. Staged in the old Cornwall canal, twenty paddlers, along with a ceremonial drummer, move in unison in a boat whose elaborate design originates in ancient China. Dragon boat racing is a great team sport that anyone can participate in. Men and women of all ages and abilities can participate and have fun. Each team entered in the event is allowed one practice run and participates in 3 races. The boats with the fastest times will compete in the finals.

The festival will also feature events for children, bathtub and tubie races, swimming, and a 5k water run. There will be a parade of boats on Saturday, where decorated boats will travel up river from Grey’s Creek to the Air Force Wing, where they will be judged.

A unique event for the weekend is the Dragon Egg Drop on Sunday August 15. A thousand dragon eggs (floating golf balls) will be dropped from the Seaway International Bridge into the canal. Tickets for the dragon eggs are available at Scotiabank on Brookdale Avenue. Dragon eggs are $10 each with a total of only 1,000 eggs to be sold.

Local sponsors for the festival include title sponsor Sun Life Financial, Corus Entertainment, Winmar, and the Seaway News. All proceeds of the festival are to support the Cornwall Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Registration for the Dragon boat teams is currently underway. Teams can pick up registration packages at Seaway Valley Tourism, local gyms, or Play It Again Sports. For a complete schedule of events and registration information visit the Cornwall Waterfest Website or call the Heart & Stroke Office at 613-938-8933.
