Cornwall's Wine Connection
Team Cornwall member Karen Brunet grew up in rural settings just minutes from Prince Edward County, yet even as a young girl she never dreamed that she would be involved in the centuries old, world-spanning world of fine wines.
Today, she is the sales manager for Huff Estates, the award winning winery in "The County" that is quickly gaining recognition as one of Canada's top producers of wine.
She is also a wine producer herself: last fall Karen, together with Huff Estates' winemaker Frederic Picard, introduced a new red wine (Picard-MacLaurin Pinot Noir) that has been receiving rave reviews from wine aficionados everywhere. MacLaurin is her maiden name.
Karen is also now a Cornwall girl, living along the St. Lawrence River with her husband, Cornwall contractor Ray Brunet.
"When Ray and I married, we had the choice to live anywhere between Picton and Cornwall and we chose Cornwall", said Karen. "I am on the road for most of the week anyway, and Cornwall is close to Ottawa and Montreal so it just makes it easy to get around. Of course, the fact that we can live right along the St. Lawrence River in such an affordable, friendly community made it a simple choice."
Cornwall's Economic Development department is currently promoting the City as a good place to live through its new website www.ChooseCornwall.ca. Karen is featured on the site with a testimonial.
"Cornwall is a great place to live and work, and I would encourage anybody considering a new home to take a closer look at the City - or even better, come and visit us."
Karen is also a Team Cornwall member and she brought her Team cards along with her on a recent trip to France to tour vineyards and wineries.
"We had a great time meeting some of the world's top winemakers", said Karen. "It was a great opportunity to introduce them to Cornwall and Eastern Ontario."
Picard-MacLaurin Pinot Noir
This special limited edition Pinot is aged a year in new-and-one-year-old barrels, from relatively young fruit (4-5 year old vines). Ascribed on the hand written label, the wine is described like the winemakers' friendship: "complex, it is delicate yet substantial. It will evolve over time. Above all, from its first encounter, it will make a lasting impression."
The wine was recently rated fourth in Ontario at the All Ontario Pinot Challenge and has received a 5-star rating from Michael Pinkus of the Ontario Wine Review:
"The nose is sour cherry, cranberry with a raspberry earthiness. In the mouth, you'll pick up cranberry, earth and sour cherry - more time in bottle will only help to integrate and complex-this-one-up both on the nose and taste. "
"Frederic and I are great friends and the Pinot Noir has been really well received", said Karen. "Lanny Huff was very gracious and supported our efforts. It is our first wine, but it certainly won't be our last."
The wine is available from Huff Estates and fine wine distributors across Ontario. Including Laura's Flowers in Cornwall, LCBO on Brookdale in Cornwall and the Village Outpost in Ingleside.
