New Community Service Launched

The Team Cornwall Job Creation Partnership Program has unveiled a new service that is designed to connect local volunteers with the organizations that need them.

The Seaway Valley Volunteer Connection will provide information on the volunteer needs of local not-for-profit organizations and events to people who want to become more involved in the community. While the service is geared toward volunteers of all ages, it will be especially valuable to students who need to complete community service hours to graduate. The Seaway Valley Volunteer Connection will help volunteers and organizations find each other, which in the long run will benefit the community as a whole.

The Volunteer Connection is a monthly email newsletter that is free to both subscribers and not-for-profit community organizations. Each month the newsletter will provide updated listings of organizations that are looking for assistance, details about the activities a volunteer could expect to be involved in, and who to contact for further information. In order to protect the privacy of subscribers, it will be left up to the individual to contact any organization that they are interested in assisting. The only personal information collected from subscribers will be an email address, which will not be released to organizations or any other third parties.

The first newsletter release is scheduled for April 9, 2008. Subsequent issues will be released on the second Wednesday of each month. The Team Cornwall Job Creation Partnership will operate the service until early July, when it will be turned over to Cornwall and Seaway Valley Tourism as an ongoing program.

While the Volunteer Connection will help organizations find the volunteers they need, it is also an opportunity for volunteers to learn different skills, meet new people, and contribute to the community. “We hope people will use this as a resource to find a group or organization that they can assist,” says Gord Shaver, Project Coordinator of the Team Cornwall Job Creation Partnership. “At the same time it allows volunteer organizations to deliver their message directly to a pool of willing and able volunteers. The community benefits, the individual volunteers benefit, and organizations have the resources they need to continue the vital work they do.”

To subscribe to the Seaway Valley Volunteer Connection, visit the Cornwall & Seaway Valley Tourism website at www.cornwalltourism.com. There is a subscription sign-up form on the home page, as well as complete information on the program, and an additional form for community and charitable organizations to register for participation.

The Team Cornwall Job Creation Partnership office is located on the second floor of Cornwall Square. The Ontario Job Creation Partnerships Program provides work experience to unemployed jobseekers in projects that benefit the community or local economy. At the end of their participation in the project, participants will have recent work experience and additional skills to add to their résumés, increasing their chances of successfully finding long-term employment.
