Ottawa families invited to Cornwall

Mark Boileau CORNWALL, ON (September 18, 2007) Ottawa families planning to move out of the city for the benefits of a home life in a smaller community would get good value by looking southeast to Cornwall, according to key quality-of-life indicators determined by a leading urban policy research group.

The comprehensive assessment, conducted earlier this year by the Pembina Institute to assess community strengths, earned the small city along the St. Lawrence River high marks for its variety of people-oriented features and diversity of affordable and attractive homes. The report also credits Cornwall for the recent success of its economic development activities.

The analysis comes at a good time for Cornwall, as families choosing to live outside the city are beginning to look beyond Ottawas traditional suburban areas. Acknowledging the emerging trend, Cornwall has launched an ad campaign this month to encourage Ottawa families to look southeast when theyre planning to relocate out of the city. Featuring a chance to win a family weekend getaway package, the campaign will invite Ottawa families to tour Cornwall and judge its hometown appeal and affordability for themselves.

Cornwall is a well-resourced, bilingual city with the feel of a small town, said Mark Boileau, manager of Cornwall Economic Development. That translates into an excellent quality of life and a very affordable cost of living perfect for families.

For many looking for a smaller community within commuting distance of Ottawa, the prime attraction to Cornwall is real estate. According to a report on average house prices by the Canadian Real Estate Association, an Ottawa familys housing dollars will go almost twice as far when buying residential property in Cornwall.

The association determined that the average price of a house in Cornwall was only $133,035 compared to $257,481 in Ottawa. Such a dramatic cost difference between the two cities could mean that families struggling to buy a house in Ottawa could afford their ideal home in Cornwall and still have money left in their pockets.

During the ad promotions, Ottawa families will be invited to sign up for a guided tour of Cornwall and be the communitys guests at a popular local event, the Cornwall Fall Home and Harvest Show, from September 28-30, 2007. People are invited to request a free information package at www.choosecornwall.ca.

Boileau noted that families coming into Cornwall for the first time are impressed with its wide range of community services and attractions, including riverside parks with bicycle and walking trails, a modern hospital, bustling shops and restaurants and a variety of educational choices, including St. Lawrence College.

One of the challenges of moving out of Ottawa to many of the outlying areas is that the places you like to go to are back in the city, making them that much further away, noted Boileau. But, in Cornwall, everything you expect to find in the city the swimming pool, movie theatres, restaurants, the library, the hospital is right here. Were a full-service city with everything located just minutes away from your front door.
