Lifetime Team Cornwall Member Honoured
A lifetime member of Team Cornwall has been honoured by the city he championed for over 60 years.
On August 28, city officials and spectators gathered on a Pitt Street sidewalk for the unveiling of a new street sign in honour of George Assaly, a founding member of Team Cornwall and well-known business figure who passed away on March 23, 2006.
George Assaly Lane is located beside Jay-Gee Shoes & Clothing, the retail business he owned and operated for 60 years.
Known throughout Eastern Ontario as a tireless supporter of Cornwall, George was highly involved with the formation of Team Cornwall and served as the organization’s second chairperson. He was a regular speaker at Team Cornwall meetings, and was influential in recruiting new members.
George was also heavily involved with other community initiatives, including tourism and downtown improvements, and was active in both the Lions Club and local Liberal Party. At the time of his death, he was serving as the Chair of the St. Lawrence Parks Commission.
In 1978 he was honoured as Cornwall's Citizen of the Year, and in 1997 the Chamber of Commerce recognized his decades of business excellence with their Lifetime Business Achievement award.
