'It's My Cornwall' Contest Launched

What do you like best about your community?

The City of Cornwall thinks local residents have fascinating stories to tell about the community, their connections to this area, and what makes living here a great choice. In fact, the municipality is offering cash prizes for the best entries in the “It’s My Cornwall” contest – and city residents get to pick the best entries.

Until June 25, 2007, the City is encouraging Cornwall residents of all ages to tell their stories about why their community is such a great place in which to live.

Individual and group stories can be created in any form – in text, video, photo, voice, painting, music – the imagination’s the limit. Entries are to be submitted by mail (It’s My Cornwall, City of Cornwall, Economic Development, 340 Pitt Street, 4th Floor, P.O. Box 877, Cornwall, ON K6H 5T9), online www.itsmycornwall.ca or by phone (613-937-7501). Short-listed entries will be announced on June 29, 2007.

From June 30, 2007 to July 6, 2007, residents can cast their votes online for their favourite short-list entries, posted on www.itsmycornwall.ca. The top ten entries receiving the most votes will win cash prizes, ranging from $100 to a $1,500 grand prize.

“It’s My Cornwall” prize winners will be announced during the opening ceremonies of Kinsmen Cornwall Lift-Off 2007, on July 12.

“It’s My Cornwall” was created by the City’s Economic Development Department and its marketing consultant Banfield-Seguin Limited, of Ottawa, as part of their branding project to describe and promote a modern image of the community. The branding initiative is the second phase of the City’s economic development strategy to attract new businesses and promote further prosperity.

“There are many positive attributes of our lifestyle in Cornwall that keep us securely anchored here and which are also attracting the attention of increasing numbers from outside our community,” noted Mayor Bob Kilger. “The ‘It’s My Cornwall Initiative’ will provide residents with an opportunity to express why Cornwall is important to them.”

All event entries become the property of the municipality and could be used in its future marketing materials.

Mark Boileau, the City’s Economic Development Manager, said the opportunity for the storytelling contest was identified during interviews conducted with local residents during the past month to better understand Cornwall from an image, or marketable brand perspective.

“On one hand, we had people telling us about the wonderful experiences they associate with life in Cornwall,” said Boileau, “while others were saying that they just couldn’t find the words to describe the strong affiliations they enjoy within this community.”

Boileau believes “It’s My Cornwall” is just the creative bridge to link both groups and attract the interest of others from outside the community. “In the process, the story submissions will help the city gain a clear, up-to-date perspective of our image for our branding and future marketing activities.”
