Team Cornwall Member on Fox Sports

Scott Pearson Team Cornwall Honourary Captain Scott Pearson may have started a new chapter in his hockey career.

The Cornwall native had an NHL career that spanned 11 years and 5 teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs who made him their top draft pick in 1988. Add in stints in the American and International hockey leagues, as well as some international hockey, and Pearson has a well-rounded hockey resume. He recently had the opportunity to take his game to a new level – the broadcast studio.

Pearson makes his home in Atlanta, Georgia, where he works as a Director for MedAssets. He recently received a phone call from Darrin Elliot, a member of the Atlanta Thrashers broadcast team, who asked if he would be interested in trying his hand at sports broadcasting on the Fox Network Sports South, which carries Thrashers and Carolina Hurricanes hockey games, as well as other sports in the south east states.

With no previous television experience and a bare minimum of training, Pearson found himself thrown into the fire as an analyst on the Fox Sports half-hour pre and post game shows. He normally appeared in 3 to 4 segments of the shows, providing a wrap-up of other action around the league and commenting on current sports stories and issues.

His first broadcast was February 15th. Was he nervous? “You bet,’ laughs Pearson, “more nervous than I ever was as a player.” Fortunately, the jitters soon passed, and Pearson found himself growing more comfortable as he gained more experience. “The key is preparation.’ says Pearson. “If you’re not prepared, it becomes apparent very quickly.”

Along with his new position came a new appreciation for the men and women on the other side of the microphone. “As a player, interviews were always pretty easy to do,” Pearson admits. “Now I look at sports differently, with a whole different ear and view for what the reporters are doing.”

The Thrashers’ playoff run was short-lived, as the team was swept by in four straight games by the New York Rangers, thus ending Pearson’s first foray into broadcasting. And if the right opportunity came along, would he consider a career change? “Who knows?” says Pearson. “It sure was a lot of fun.”
