Supporting our Troops

Team Cornwall member Guy Lauzon is spearheading a local campaign to support Canadian Armed Forces serving abroad, and his campaign is getting noticed.

Mr. Lauzon is the Member of Parliament for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry.

Lauzon recently purchased (at his own expense) 1,500 lawn and window signs bearing the words “Support our Troops”, and made those signs available free of charge to constituents through his riding offices. The signs were snapped up, and donations from constituents paid for another batch of several hundred signs, which are also going fast. Lauzon is also offering free red ribbons, fastened with Canadian flag pins, for constituents to wear on their lapels to demonstrate their support for Canadian troops.

Mr. Lauzon has also invited local citizens to add their signatures to a letter of support for Canadian troops serving in Afghanistan. He already has over 1,000 signatures, and hopes to reach as high as 2000 by Remembrance Day, November 11th . The letter will be sent to Afghanistan.

These efforts recently prompted a grateful letter from a member of the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders who is currently serving in Afghanistan. The message read in part, “I've been hearing a lot about how much support we're getting from Cornwall. From everyone wearing red on Fridays to your office giving out lawn and window signs and sending letters, thank you. There are two basic things here that keep us going: The brotherhood among our fellow soldiers, and support from friends and family at home. The idea of one’s community giving half a dozen individuals (as well as the armed forces as a whole) such support is just amazing… I doubt you or the good people of Cornwall realize the effect your efforts and support has on us.”

For his own part, Lauzon said, “The people in our riding are very supportive of Canadian troops and the great work they are doing. I think this represents the view of a large majority of Canadians from coast to coast. I want to help Canadians show their pride in our troops, because I know the morale and effectiveness our men and women in uniform depends on support from their fellow citizens.”
